Minions The Rise of Gru is a 2022 computer-animated comedy film, produced by Illumination and distributed by Universal Pictures. It is the sequel to Minions: The Prequel, and the fifth film in the Despicable Me franchise. It is a comedy about the adventures of the lovable but mischievous Minions.

Minions The Rise of Gru picks up in 1976 when Steve Carell’s Felonious Gru (voiced by Russell Brand) is an 11-year-old. He plots to become a supervillain and recruits the Minions to aid him in his plans. Gru is eventually joined by Wild Knuckles, a former supervillain voiced by Alan Arkin. The film also stars Julie Andrews as Marlena Gru, Michelle Yeoh as Master Chow, and Dolph Lundgren as Svengeance.

In this sequel, Gru dreams of becoming a supervillain and hires the Minions to work for him. Eventually, he gets an audition from the Vicious Six, led by Belle Bottom. This group betrayed their member Wild Knuckles, who is connected to the Chinese zodiac. In the process of his audition, Gru steals the Zodiac Stone and escapes with it.

While Minions The Rise of Gru has been a smash hit in theaters, it has been slow to hit the streaming services. While Universal has not yet specified when it will arrive on Peacock, the film is expected to hit HBO and Netflix after it’s Peacock window has expired. It’s not clear whether Minions: The Rise of Gru will come to Disney+.

Minions The Rise of Gru has grossed $360.7 million in the United States and Canada, and a total of $533.2 million internationally. It is currently the fourth-highest-grossing movie of 2022.
